staghounds said: I don’t understand. When someone I care for dies, that’s “an adversity” for HIM- the dies!
When someone I care for gets sick, that’s an adversity for HIM- he is sick!
When something bad happens to someone else’s health, there’s nothing I or anyone else can do about it. It doesn’t call for any action on my part. I can be sad, take them flowers, bear up or wallow in grief- but at bottom, my reaction doesn’t matter.
When I’m trying to get into the Naval Academy, I’m confronted by its difficult curriculum, the ship under me is on fire, I’m locked in prison, I’m crippled, I’m tortured and told I can stop it by merely asking, or I’m assigned to be a target for men who are trying to kill me, that’s MY adversity. I have to summon the resources, first, to put myself into places where those things can happen, and then I have to deal with them. I can succeed or fail, and my own character, strength, and weakness are revealed.
I’m sorry that Sen. Biden’s family suffered, but death is the lot of us all. My own fortunate American grandparents, Queen Victoria when she presided over a quarter of the earth, or great swathes of people in the world today would be shocked at the idea that the death of a child was a particularly unusual event. It was and is a part of the ordinary landscape.
His sons? I would EXPECT that a father would take care of his injured children, as we all would. The law requires it! Pointing at that as some sort of accomplishment is silly and wrong. It’s like saying,
“He had adversities. He had to pay taxes!” What choice did he have?
Having a brain aneurysm says absolutely nothing about the person having it. There’s no choice involved, no decision to be made, no character revealed. If you die, you die. If you survive, you survive. If there are aftereffects, you do your therapy if you want to be able to do things.
(Truth is, I expect that Sen. Biden would be the first to tell these women that the “adversities” were suffered by his wife and children, not by himself.)
The comparisons are just nonsense.

Misapplying definitions is a common Marxist rhetorical ploy.
ColJ and I go back far enough to remember how the term was applied in a derisive, racist fashion. I haven’t heard it used that way in decades, though. It was overtaken by the left’s soft racism of Uncle Tom and actin’ white.
