When you cheat your way to the top and need cheaters to keep you there you have no foundation and the more cheating you add to the false foundation will eventually topple your tower.

Laurence is exactly right—the crooks in Congress are working to confiscate 401k and private pension plans. To “shore up” Social Security, of course. Can’t you hear it now? (cue the violins) “We must take this step immediately, because it’s just not fair that some people have so much, while others have nothing… we have to do something to help these people and avoid a crisis! We have to save America! We must shore up Social Security or old people will stave and babies will die! Think of the Children! What about the Environment?!?” etc. etc. etc. And the press will go right along with it.

Don’t think for a second it can’t or won’t happen. Congress is ready to “deem” passage of a bill they never voted upon in order to stake claim to your money (e.g. a portion of your life)! They do what they want, Constitution and voters be damned! They will gladly lose a battle in a strategic effort to win the “war” against capitalism, even if it means a temporary loss of power in the next election or two. That is, if the efforts to make citizens out of 20-30,000,000 illegals isn’t enough to guarantee the liberals permanent power.

My advice is to lump sum cash out 401Ks and Pensions now—TODAY— and suffer the tax hit. We are in the middle of a “dead cat bounce” and are positioned for a second wave of economic pain as commercial finance collapses in late 2010/2011. IMO, it’s better to walk away with 50% of something than 100% of nothing. Invest in physical assets that will survive the collapse of the US Dollar. Buy some foreign property and move cash offshore to get your escape plan in place. Because, when the federal IOU machine runs empty, Congress *will* come looking for any source of money they can find. Your 401k will be their new ATM machine.

Unless you think conditions will improve for the middle class in America over the next 10-20 years. If so, I would REALLY like to know why you believe this because history tells me otherwise.

Now I get it (lite bulb) that’s why the theys didn’t want to change SS and just added to the amount paid in.  Glad it was all for our own good just like this health care is being shoved down our throats and up our **s.  It’s good for us wether we like it or not.
Wait until you draw some of that savings you’ll need for your retirement and see the taxes you’ll pay on that.  Then if you die b/4 you use it the taxes all your kids will pay on it and the free health care you’re going to get.

I’m sure the first people to loose their social security payments will be those who don’t need it.  You know, those people who worked like dogs their whole life and scrimped and saved to where they have enough saved/invested to draw about as much out as they receive in SS.  Or maybe they payed off their homes so they would not have to worry about that expense.

You have to read stories about current Social Security deficits carefully. Many minimize or eliminate the deficit by crediting non-existent interest on the non-existent trust funds. The real deficit is OASDI taxes minus ( benefits and expenses. ) Remember that every federal trust fund is actually part of the national debt.

Any plan to save Social Security by raising current taxes is a scam since, by law, any excess taxes will be credited to the debt and spent. The exception would be if these new taxes were used to set up individual accounts, hopefully with rights of inheritance. But there is already a move afoot in Congress to try the Argentinian method of confiscating all IRAs and 401-Ks

FYI: the Supreme Court has already rules that entitlements are not guaranteed and can be reduced at anytime by act of Congress.
