California employers added just 12,500 jobs to payrolls in January, pushing the unemployment rate down to 12.4% from 12.5% in December, according to the state Employment Development Department.

...Wisconsin’s Republican leaders upped the stakes Thursday in their standoff with Democratic state senators who fled the state to deny a vote on anti-union bill, with Gov. Scott Walker threatening to begin issuing layoff notices within 24 hours unless his measure was passed and Senate Republicans authorizing police to round up their missing colleagues.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Walker said he will issue layoff notices to 1,500 state workers on Friday ...

~ ( * ) ~ ....the state Capitol, which was completely cleared of demonstrators late Thursday for the first time in 17 nights after a judge ordered the building closed during non-business hours.
The final 50 or so protesters left peacefully about two hours after the judge’s order, which also said the state unconstitutionally limited access to the building since Monday and ordered the state to grant greater access to the public starting next Monday.

...The lease for land at Coralville Lake that was to be home to a long-delayed Muslim youth camp has expired, but the project isn’t dead yet.
The five-year lease between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Muslim Youth Camps of America expired Feb. 28.
But Ron Fournier, spokesman for the Corps office in Rock Island, Ill., said Thursday the Corps is reviewing MYCA’s request for an extension.
Also, Jalel Aossey of Cedar Rapids, one of the organizers of the camp, said in an e-mail message that the project is alive, although its scale will be reduced and take a more regional approach for campers and nonprofit activities.
Aossey is travelling overseas and more details were not immediately available.
“There is more to follow on MYCA,” he wrote.

Meteorologists launched a new campaign Wednesday to get people in England involved in measuring climate change by using a mirror, soap bubbles or simply looking up at the sky.

The Met Office national weather service is asking people to complete a series of simple activities to check the results of climatic computer models.

They include measuring wind speed by blowing bubbles into the air to monitoring the direction of clouds with the aid of a mirror.

Participants are being asked to spot plane vapour trails to measure air temperature and humidity, and to record how cold or hot they feel...

Illinois Officials Spar Over Order to Make List of Gun Owners Public

In a showdown over the privacy rights of gun owners, the Illinois State Police are refusing to release a list identifying all firearm permit holders in the state after Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan determined that the information “must” be made public.

At least the State Police seem to have their shit together in refusing this little tinpot harridan’s grab, but that doesn’t make the fact that she presumed it in the first place any more palatable.

Assistant Public Access Counselor Matthew Rogina, citing federal court decisions as well as Illinois law, wrote in a letter to the state police attorney that disclosing the names “cannot be characterized as highly personal or objectionable.”

Not to him, maybe, but then I’m sure he doesn’t carry anything as “objectionable” as a firearm.  The sinister little busybody probably has bodyguards to do that for him.

“Therefore, even if disclosure of the names and expiration of the (Firearm Owner’s Identification Card) card owners did constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy, this fact is outweighed by the public interest that exists in ensuring the integrity of the (police) database,” he wrote

Someone explain to me how that’s a function of the public having access to all those names, and not just the police?  Are the police letting random people update their databases for them now?  The police ALREADY HAVE both those names and the responsibility to keep their own databases up to date.

They should just knock off the pathetic justifications and come right out and say what they mean: if you dare to exercise your second amendment rights, they want you to know they know exactly who you are and where you live, and they’re going to advertise that to everyone else who might be interested as well.  So if you don’t want that kind of attention - the kind that might get your boss’s nose out of joint if he happens to lean left, or give your ex-wife’s lawyer leverage against you in a custody case, for example - then you’d better reconsider your right to bear arms.

 Idea: a re-imagining of Mississippi Burning in which Hackman and Dafoe are cast as villains for trying to force a principled sheriff to arrest and prosecute “his people” — in this instance, a local community organizer who preaches ethnic pride and a handful of good ol’ boys/working men who have joined the fight to save civic custom.*

...The union horde is spreading, from Madison to Indianapolis to a state capital near you. And yet the Democratic and union bigwigs engineering the outrage haven’t directed their angry multitudes at what is arguably the most “hostile workplace” in the nation: Washington, D.C.

It will no doubt surprise you to learn that President Obama, the great patron of the working man, also happens to be the great CEO of one of the least union-friendly shop floors in the nation.

This is, after all, the president who has berated Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to limit the collective bargaining rights of public employees, calling the very idea an “assault on unions.” This is also the president who has sicced his political arm, Organizing for America, on Madison, allowing the group to fill buses and plan rallies. Ah, but it’s easy to throw rocks when you live in a stone (White) house.

Fact: President Obama is the boss of a civil work force that numbers up to two million (excluding postal workers and uniformed military). Fact: Those federal workers cannot bargain for wages or benefits. Fact: Washington, D.C. is, in the purest sense, a “right to work zone.” Federal employees are not compelled to join a union, nor to pay union dues. Fact: Neither Mr. Obama, nor the prior Democratic majority, ever acted to give their union chums a better federal deal...
