“freedom fighters” strike again

Four dead children, belonging to a Kurdish Shiite family, lie inside a morgue in Baqouba, Iraq, Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005. Eleven members of a Kurdish Shiite family were killed Saturday when gunmen sprayed their minibus with automatic weapons’ fire northeast of Baghdad, police said. Three other family members were wounded, police added.

Yea, I hear the crickets too.

I’d leave out the Rosa Parks reference

Hundreds of worried and angry voters deluged the King County elections department Friday with calls questioning a Republican-backed effort challenging their right to vote in Tuesday’s election, elections officials said.

Several voters said that King County GOP Vice Chairman Lori Sotelo was dead wrong in her claim that their voter registration addresses are not those of legitimate residences. And Democratic politicians denounced the Republican initiative as a blatant attempt to intimidate voters.

State GOP Chairman Chris Vance acknowledged some challenges were brought in error and would be withdrawn. But he vigorously defended the undertaking overall and promised more of the same.

The spark for the political firestorm was the delivery of certified letters Thursday from the county elections department to voters on the GOP hit list, which totaled 1,774 names after duplicates were eliminated. The letters informed the voters of the challenge and cited the state law requiring voters to register at a valid residence address.

Democratic politicians Friday assailed the Republicans’ challenge effort.

“This is not election reform, this is voter intimidation and voter suppression,” County Council Chairman Larry Phillips said in a news release. “Validly registered voters in King County should not be intimidated by this Republican dirty trick.”

And state Democratic Party Chairman Paul Berendt said in a release, “This shows how desperate the Republicans are and what lengths they will go to in order to win.”

*gratutous RACIST!!! interjection:

“I’m extremely disappointed and angry at the audacity of this woman and the party she represents,” said Demene Hall, who got one of the letters. Hall has lived for 16 years at the Watermarke apartment building at 320 Cedar St. in Seattle, her registration address.

Hall, who said she is “too African American” not to be a regular voter, said Friday she came of age in the civil rights era and watched her parents hand out political fliers outside polling places they were not allowed to enter.

“We just buried Rosa Parks on Wednesday, I got the letter on Thursday and today is my 57th birthday,” she said. ”And they’re challenging my validity?”

OK...so you tell me

Voters who did not list proper residential addresses on their registrations can submit valid ones today and vote freely Tuesday. Otherwise, challenged poll voters will be given provisional ballots Tuesday that will be set aside pending hearings by the county Canvassing Board prior to certification of the vote Nov. 29.

Challenged voters can update their address by calling 206-296-VOTE or in person at the King County Administration Building located at 500 Fourth Ave., Room 553 today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“at risk voters”

Not voting, he insisted, is a political statement equivalent to filling in the ballot bubbles.

“If you don’t vote, it doesn’t mean that you don’t care,” he said. “Rather, what it means is that you disagree and there were no other valid options available to you.

“Therefore, not voting is a valid means of expressing discontent with the status quo.”

He suggested that if enough people don’t vote in an election, the results should be invalid.

“At any time someone places whatever mark upon whatever ballot, they are - for all intents and purposes - validating the outcome,” Totty wrote.

“What of those who refuse to validate an essentially corrupt process? Are they to become slaves to the rest?” he said.

That’s a question worth voting on.

So, you agree with Totty?

He sorta sounds like a Iraqi Sunni to me.

SCUM!!!

The opposition Socialists have criticized Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy’s “zero tolerance” policy toward rioters, whom he has branded “scum.” Sarkozy has responded by drafting in an extra 2,300 police.

“Sarkozy made a mistake by talking about ‘scum’. That provoked people. This is the result,” said Hurier, who has lived in Evreux since 1982. “These youngsters ... just want a job and respect.”

I just want a cup of coffee and a bowl of cereal for breakfast. I think I’ll go beat on my Beemer with a sledgehammer.

That provoked people. This is the result

Really? Like they started pre-emptive rioting afore?

Let me tell you something. I’ve been poor. I’ve been hungry. I’ve been frustrated. I’ve lived in shitty places. And I’ve been cold. My mama tought me to put on a sweater and get on gettin ‘er dun. Yea, I’ve wanted respect too. So I went out and earned it. It’s not a fricken birthright.

Project Valour-IT : let the love flow!

This post will remain at the top for a couple of days or until you all run out of money.

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries or amputations at major military medical centers.  Operating laptops by speaking into a microphone, our wounded heroes are able to send and receive messages from friends and loved ones, surf the ‘Net, and communicate with buddies still in the field without having to press a key or move a mouse. The experience of CPT Charles “Chuck” Ziegenfuss, a partner in the project who suffered hand wounds while serving in Iraq, illustrates how important this voice-controlled software can be to a wounded servicemember’s recovery.

To ensure that KisP is acknowledged as a force in the world of fundraising, we’ve decide to bring a little fun to the Army team.

[sorry friends, altho we love ALL of our armed forces we just HAD to GO ARMY!!!! (And don’t worry, I’m going to give someone a little hard time that our Coast Guard wasn’t included...ahem.) SK]

Here’s how it works Although donating money to a worthy cause such as this is rewarding by itself, getting neat stuff is so much more fun. So, At least a couple of us will be putting things up for auction, setting a minimum bid and letting you go after it. There are obviously two ways to participate. You can just bid on items you can’t live without, or you can actually put an item up for auction. One other simple thing you can do is get the word out to our Army teammates. The more the merrier!

The rules are simple:

For people wishing to donate items (Auctioneers)
1. Pick an item to donate and decide what your minimum bid will be.
2. Email with a description of your item and the minimum bid.
3. Your item will be posted and the fun will begin.
4. At the close of the auction, email the above address with the item, the winning bid and the name of the winner.

For people wishing to bid (Buyers):
1. Leave a comment on this post, naming the item you desire and how much you’ll donate to own it.
2. Once the bidding is closed, make your donation and provide the Auctioneer with proof (like your Paypal receipt).
3. All disputes will be handled bewteen the buyer and the Auctioneer (Sondra and I don’t have time to don the Wapner robe).

All Auctions will close at precisely 11:59, CST on Monday night. I don’t think we have the energy to keep it going until the 11th.

[still working on this part....gonna TRY and keep it up until Friday...the auction part… but you know how THAT goes....so bid and donate accordingly....donations will be accepted at ANY time, however! SK]

Easy, huh? If anyone would care to donate a little time to help us keep this thing straight, we’d be eternally in your debt.

Seriously, this can be fun, and a good way to get rid of a piece of clutter or two and I’ll even start it off.

Matt is offering:
Item: An autographed copy of Victor Davis Hanson’s, Between War and Peace (Lessons from Afganistan to Iraq). It’s a paperback, but one of those nice, bigger ones.
Minimum Donation: $15.00

Item: An autographed (hardcover) copy of Bob Dole’s, Great Presidential Wit
Minimum Donation: $15.00

Sondra (and hopefully many others) will be here soon with more fabulous items.

And now we come to the extra-ordinary very special offering from our own Sierrahome.

A few of you all are aware of John’s beautiful pictorial montage/slide show productions that are made personally for many of our beloved service people. All that’s required of the bidder is the use of 30-50 chosen photographs (digital and or scanned copies) of choice photos relating to their subject and their choice of music. We’re going to offer this on a tiered scale:

For a $25 donation:
Digital photographs sent peer-to-peer and completed work to be retrieved on-line at a to-be-specified location.

For a $50 donation:
The completed project will be burned to a DVD and boxed and mailed to you. We pay postage.

For a $75 donation:
A beautiful biography DVD box of the subject - also including pictorial slideshow DVD.

Send proof of donation (PayPal receipt, all personal info deleted of course) to: johnnywahoo@msn.com and then you can begin correspondence with John and get your project started!

Of course straight up donations will be most appreciated but we thought we’d have a little fun and sweeten the pot. (Added to The Sunday Drive)

Update! Here’s a brief example of John’s work (right-click and Save As). Fantastic stuff.

Statement by Secretary Gates on impact on health care legislation on TRICARE
Sun, 21 Mar 2010 22:36:00 -0500

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No. 220-20
March 21, 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Statement by Secretary Gates on impact on health care legislation on TRICARE

As Secretary of Defense, the health and well-being of America’s men and women in uniform is my highest priority.

Our troops and their families can be re-assured that the health care reform legislation being passed by the Congress will not negatively impact the TRICARE medical insurance program, as it already meets the bill’s quality and minimum benefit standards.  This was clarified by a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday and is expected to be re-affirmed by the Senate.

The President and I are committed to seeing that our troops, retirees and their families will continue to receive the best quality health care.
