I have to admit I’m a little leery of the populist part—it’s been my obervation that populism usually winds up undermining the things that libertarians believe in (case in point: George Wallace).  But we’ll see how it works out.  A lot of people, me included, thought that fusion conservatism died with Buckley.  I’d be happy for Palin to prove me wrong.

My perception is that these core beliefs and values....not just Palin’s but much of what McCain believes… is at the heart of what middle class America believes. And that is contrary to what Obama just said in response to what he thought about the RNC as a whole. He said in an off the cuff statement that “America’s middle class” was ignored and left out of the whole convention.

WTF?  I mean, really....W.T.F?!?!?!? I don’t know what Barry was watching or smoking that gave him that impression.

What is more middle class than two disperate families coming together because they wish to reinstitute the word “SERVANT” back into the phrase elected public servant...to truly represent the core values of middle America in Washington, not just the lobbyists and special interests and the ensconsed good ol’boy network.

Back in the joy of my youth, in the Bronx of the late 50s and early 60s, basketball became the preferred way to waste my time.  Eventually, my skills led me and some friends to travel to other neighborhoods in search of new competition.  Some of these neighborhoods were more “diverse” and less safe than my own.  News of my travels reached my father and I was subsequently summoned to a “Denis, me boy-o” meeting in our living room.

My father had grown up in Ireland and came to this country in 1927, in time for both the Great Depression and World War II.  He was a practicing Catholic and, to my knowledge, had no particular bone to pick with black folks.  When he found out where I had been traveling to play ball, he shared the following advise with me; “right or wrong, don’t ever expect them to take your part against their own.”

It was good advice then, as now.
