The House voted overwhelmingly Thursday to prohibit the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from using taxpayer dollars to impose the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters who feature conservative radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

By a vote of 309-115, lawmakers amended the Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill to bar the FCC from requiring broadcasters to balance conservative content with liberal programming such as Air America.

The vote count was partly a testament to the influence that radio hosts wield in many congressional districts.

It was also a rebuke to Democratic senators and policy experts who have voiced support this week for regulating talk radio.

House Democrats argued that it was merely a Republican political stunt because there is little danger of the FCC restricting conservative radio while George W. Bush is president.

“We ought to let right-wing talk radio go on as they do now,” he said. “Rush and Sean are just about as important in the scheme of things as Paris Hilton, and I would hate to see them gain an ounce of credibility by being forced by a government agency or anybody else to moderate their views enough that they might become modestly influential or respected.”

A member of the anti-war group Code Pink who had staged a hunger strike in order to force a meeting with Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) on his stance on Iran collapsed in the senator’s office Thursday.

Leslie Angeline, who had recently traveled to Iran, wanted to discuss the senator’s remarks from earlier this month that indicate he would support a limited air strike on the country.

The 50-year-old woman launched a hunger strike to get a face-to-face meeting with Lieberman but was repeatedly rebuffed, according to Code Pink. However, Lieberman’s staff has met with her on the issue.

Angeline was 15 days into her hunger strike and had lived off of clear liquids, according to Code Pink member Medea Benjamin. At one time she was granted a meeting, but the face-to-face was canceled by Lieberman’s office, the group said.

Angeline is being treated for dehydration at George Washington University hospital.
Lieberman’s office could not be reached for comment.

A+

This has been a good day for America.

For a while, it didn’t look like Washington was going to listen to us regarding real immigration reform. Thankfully, we’ve been spared a serious mistake, but I wonder if things would have turned out the way they did without the work done by the bloggers, talk radio and the American people. Rush, Hannity, Laura Ingraham, RedState, Powerline, Pajamas Media and a lot of others have done a great job. Take that, Fairness Doctrine.

dead (for now)

The Senate drove a stake Thursday through President Bush’s plan to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants, likely postponing major action on immigration until after the 2008 elections.

The bill’s supporters fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to limit debate and clear the way for final passage of the legislation, which critics assailed as offering amnesty to illegal immigrants. The vote was 46 to 53 in favor of limiting the debate.

Sounds like some Senatards listened to us xenophobic, hate-mongering nativists…

New Mexico Sen. Pete Domenici once supported the bill. Up for re-election in 2008, he told FOX News that Republicans are “getting hammered here at home and for what? Something that doesn’t even have the chance of becoming law? No. This bill is going down. ... Why are we having all these big amendments? They (supporters) don’t even know what’s in this bill. We learned it’s not even enforceable. I just don’t think I can support this bill.”

today’s other people’s money

Despite low approval ratings and hard feelings from last year’s elections, Democrats and Republicans in the House are reaching out for an approximately $4,400 pay raise that would increase their salaries to almost $170,000.

let me indoctrinate you

Today’s New York Times contains a discussion of Indoctrinate U and the issue of free speech on campus.

Most of the article was spent addressing cases that weren’t in the film, rather than addressing what was in the film. The author also claims that “professors, administrators and students say the national picture is far more complicated than that pictured in ‘Indoctrinate U,’” although I don’t know how they could know that, because none of those people actually saw the film........................

Microcosm of Moonbattery

Unions and liberal organizations joined with the left-wing fringe Wednesday on a 1,000-person march through downtown Atlanta to demand everything from universal health care and worker rights to an end to U.S meddling in Venezuela and the Bush presidency.

The puppets.  Always with the puppets.  I just hope that papier mache
is from 100% post consumer waste and is carbon neutral.

The march opened the United States Social Forum in Atlanta, a gathering of left-wing organizations that seek to address economic, political and social issues by mobilizing people power. The marchers, many of whom are here to attend workshops throughout the weekend, had various messages, including “Make Levees, not War.”

“There is no freedom and democracy for most people in this country,” said
Jaribu Hill, who was with the Mississippi Workers Center
for Human Rights, just before beginning the protest march.
“Most people live in abject poverty in the richest country of the world.”

Define “freedom,” “democracy,” “most” and “abject poverty” there, Jaribu.

Jose Angel Mijares arrived with group from Colorado that marched with a banner demanding “rights for our people.” He said his contingent hoped to learn how to protect its rights by attending the workshops over the next four days.

“The cops in Denver, they act like immigration officers,” he said. “When we wait for work, they ask for our papers.”

Apparently Jose Angel Mijares ain’t being hassled too hard.  He was able to afford the trip from Denver to Atlanta despite the best efforts of the cops to enforce the frakkin’ law.

Now that the Dems have gutted my IRA with the sub prime loan/bailout debacles, I’m pretty sure I’m going to convert everything to Roth and tangibles before the Bush tax cuts expire this year, and do my best to have no taxable income forever after.
Cash and carry, bill by barter, black market and underground economy here we come.

The Dems are smug now, but are in for some bitter medicine:
A ton of them will lose their jobs.
The new Repub majority will blacklist the newly unelected for government employment or lobbying jobs.
Dem corruption will be daylighted like they’ve never seen
When people find out doctors will not take Uhbamacare patients or retire and a huge doctor shortage arises, even more Dems will lose their jobs.
Vengeance may even take the form of cutting Congressional pensions and medical bennies for retirees.
And we haven’t even gotten to the 30+ state and private lawsuits such as the already prepared Landmark Legal Foundation’s, which is ready to go to court tomorrow.
Unemployment will go up.
Tax revenues will fall precipitously.
Somewhere, some day, some desparate, angry guy who has been ruined by the past few years of Dem criminality is going to assault one of those bastards back in the home district. I fear the Government reaction to that, but a part of me would love to see it.
