The Ugly American

Funny...nobody forced me to join the Navy and lie about who I was.

All I had to do was not play “ladies” softball and avoid pushing my “roommate’s” barracks bed next to mine to form a cozy double.

Oh...and not get slovenly-drunk while rubbing my crotch up against the other “ladies” at the EM Club.

Sorry about the hummus. Here’s a napkin.

Is this administration full tilt bozo or what. That pic Sondra says it so right on because I was thinking about the more important stuff that confronts our nation and like Clinton before him, Barry is more interested in a gay issue.

People in this nation are FED UP!  If there was ever a time for a number of terrorists hits it would be now. And the enemy knows it.
They seen the confusion that is the real SOTU.

Divisiveness in all areas of America. And of all places, our military. And as if Afghanastan isn’t a big screw up our military has to take ‘sensitivety’ training about the “culture” of the Pashtons in a area of Kandahar that we’re trying to win a war in:

The report also detailed a disturbing practice in which older “men of status” keep young boys on hand for sexual relationships. One of the country’s favorite sayings, the report said, is “women are for children, boys are for pleasure.”

The report concluded that the widespread homosexual behavior stems from several factors, including the “severe segregation” of women in the society and the “prohibitive” cost of marriage.

Always had mixed feelings on this’n.  Why?  Well, because fears and prejudices take a L-O-N-G time to dissipate.  As a parallel, take racism, or sexism, or any other major ism and look at how long it’s taken us to get over them (which we ain’t yet).

Point is that no matter how modern, how educated, how enlightened the general populace becomes, a residual homophobia will persist, just as racism is still with us 150 years after slavery was outlawed, and 60 years after the military was racially integrated by executive order.  It’s now 50 years after the civil rights movement got into swing, and we’re still jawin at each other about racism in many arenas.

Homosexuals in human societies tend to run between 5 and 12% of total population, and they’ve always been in the military, generally doing a pretty good job just like everybody else.  The flamers are usually detected in basic training and either immediately shut down or are forced out.

I’ve worked for both gay men and lesbians in various jobs, and the only time it was an issue was when THEY made it one.  Had a department head once who was militant about it and wanted to alter standing rules and regs to match his agenda.  He was scuttled and jettisoned by his colleagues, and this happened in a university college of arts and sciences!!

I also worked with a lesbian Navy lieutenant who was a very good officer, but she openly disclosed her lifestyle to the wrong audience and was politely asked not to extend her service beyond the obligation she’d accepted for her promotion to O3.  Her separation was under honorable conditions since no official paper trail was ever created.

Gays serving openly will have some rough rows to hoe for several years, perhaps decades, and I expect some rather brutal and possibly fatal behavior will result.  Maybe in 50 years or so it’ll have calmed down, but by that time we won’t have much of a military anyway.

I will say that Bush missed his opportunity on this one.

He tried to push Shamnesty on us but ending DADT? .... unthinkable!

Frankly though...I think this is going to open pandora’s box in regards to articles of the UCMJ.

And no, I don’t mean just sodomy.

”Mullen looked pained when Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., suggested that the Joint Chiefs chairman had preordained the outcome of any study by signaling his own opposition to the ban.”

Yeah, it’s called “command influence.” Smooth move, admiral.  That’s gonna percolate down the command chain.

I’m a 70 year old hetero father of 5 sons and very conservative politically.
I just cannot get why we conservatives want to keep making a big deal about homosexuals.  They make up about 5% of the population and just are not very important to the future of this country. They are and have always been in the military.  The men in the military can deal with it, misconduct can be dealt with. Those who want to serve their country should be able to.

TUA hits the nail on the head.

the problem is NOT the policy.  the military may grumble, but they’ll salute the flag and follow the lawful orders of the commander in chief…

the REAL problem/issue is that CONGRESS has completely avoided their obligation to appropriately update the Uniform Code to first eliminate those particular punitive articles that would cause a homosexual individual to be committing an offense by merely doing what constitutes being what they are… change the laws FIRST, then we can implement policy.

I get so tired of this subject, not because of what people are but because of those that bring their life style on others with a vengeance.
I’ve worked with blacks that weren’t black to me, they were excellent NCO’s
I’ve worked for an officer that was a lesbian, and she was excellent
Men and women with some unusual tattoo’s, body piercings’ and open life-styles----- off duty and at home it’s none of my business.
Well except for one enlisted guy that got his scrotum pierced and wanted me to see his ring (I graciously declined) but he was a productive worker and one heck of a heavy equipment operator.
Do your job and I’ll give you no grief. Just don’t demand that others become more like you. Never had a problem with any of those I worked with.

Side note: use to be we had open racks in berthing, these new folks get bunks with splash curtains, errrr privacy
curtains now-a-days.

So, everyone agrees that I get to shower with the women now, right?  And share barracks rooms with them?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you’re going to ask me to share a room and a shower with someone who may find me sexually attractive, then I’m going to ask you to return the favor.  I like redheads if you don’t mind.

Our barracks were practically co-ed anyway, what with all the hetero-humping going on.

I remember I had one barracks roommate who’d boink her boyfriend while I attempted to sleep in my bunk a mere 10 feet away.

Truly unbelievably piggish behavior.

With all the problems going on currently, this is considered a priority?  Guess things aren’t as bad as I thought.

Theoretically right.  Practically-- yes Pandora’s Box.

This is about as useful has another hole in your head! Someone tell me how repealing DADT enhances readiness? Someone tell me how leadership will be required to deal with people whose identity is NOT about the Army, Navy, Marine or Air Force, but instead, their sexuality?

This is nonsense.  As a 20 year vet I can tell you that gays are serving honorably in the military.  As long as they show up on time and do their job, nobody gives a damn.
But, we don’t need to be having gay pride parades going up and down the pier.  Just keep it to yourself, and maintain good order and discipline.
We may not care what you do in the privacy of your own home, but don’t bring it to work.
So say I!
