Now that’s civil disobedience.

“If desecrating Old Glory is protected speech, then so is rescuing it.”..........I havent read or heard anything in a long while that more clearly states the case for justice and common sense than the above. Every policeman and judge in the USA (or everywhere) should understand this instinctively and act accordingly....My profound warm regards and compliments to the originator of this phrase.

I’ll believe it when officialdom declines to charge someone who “assaulted” Code Pink, or someone else of its ilk, in this fashion.  Note the complaining party were those idiots from Fred Phelps’ “church”.

JMcD,
Awww… gorsh.

A just and wrathful God is watching you, Mr. Phelps.

A question for those who believe that burning/desecrating a flag should be illegal:
Do you believe that it is practical to enforce such a law, or do you support one out of symbolism, even though it’s unlikely that it could be enforced. I’m serious, and am curious as to the rationale. Here’s why I ask:
What is a flag? Is it a certain size or material? I see clothes with images of the flag. Presumably, at some point, these clothes are old and tossed. Desecration? What about an image of a flag that is printed off of a printer? 50 stars and everything, is that protected? What if someone does a needlepoint of a flag, and feels like burning it for whatever reason. Protected? As far as burning a flag in public, I assume that most locales have laws against burning things in public.

I’m not posing this to get myself flamed, I’m just wondering what the thought is.

Those MFCSers from Westboro Baptist Church are currently protesting at Eve Carson’s funeral (she was University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill class president, murdered by two gang members last week).

They’re standing beside the highway with “You’re going to hell” and “God Hates Fags” signs, claiming that Eve Carson’s murder is God’s punishment for a sinful life.

Where’s a muslim with an SUV and a hatred of crowds when you need one?

Jack Flash - It is the symbol my father and brothers fought, bled and died defending. Unenforceable? Not when I’m around!

comment by MCPO Airdale  on  03/18  at  02:49 PM

JackFlash, nice to see you:)

I’m not sure I can answer your question right at the moment with my full attention but you might want to look at it the way some folks look at incitement…
It’s clearly meant to piss people off and it does…
It’s intent.

Homicide, pre-mediated murder, manslaughter all have different connotations by intent.
(NOT saying it’s the same!!)

Every time I hear about those assholes,I see red.I want to remind them,face-to-face,that far better people than they have died to protect their right to be assholes.

Jack Flash, the flag is not suppose to appear on clothing, it isn’t suppose to appear on cardboard shipping boxes that say, “made in America”, it shouldn’t be put on anything that can easily get marked up, dirty or destroyed.

Here is a list of flag rules.

What I would like to know why is burning an American flag “free speech” but burning a rainbow flag “hate speech?”

a BIg OOH F**KING RAH ! ! !!  FOR HIM! !!!!!!!!!!!

If I saw any sonofabitch desecreting the US Flag I’d wump ass.

WHat MCPO and UU said.

Men and women of great courage shed blood and offered their lives for our flag and nation.  They viewed it as that important.  You’ll find most (if not all) of us here do as well.

And I am tired of communist scum using “free speech” as their excuse to insult this nation and her flag.  But, should I desecrate the flag of any other country or organization, it’s called a hate crime.  Why?

comment by raz0r  on  03/19  at  05:43 AM

I’m not disagreeing with the fact that people have died to protect it. I’m just coming from the angle that it seems like a symbolic law (if it was a law), more so than anything that could be enforced. If it’s done to incite something, then there are already laws that apply. It doesn’t matter how you do it, inciting a riot, or other incident is illegal. FWIW, I don’t think burning a rainbow flag should be illegal in and of itself either. Only under, you know, arson statutes and the aforementioned inciting thing.

Thanks for the answers.

What I love about this is the hypocracy.  It’s the right wingers who predominantly want to be able to do what ever the hell the want to their own property including mowing down all the trees and paving over it, but a flag is not just somebody’s flag, it’s suddenly every bodies flag.

comment by rdog  on  03/20  at  11:49 AM

Let’s see.  It’s my property, so yeah, I get to do with it what I want because?  That’ right - I paid for it.  That house is for me and my family alone.

It’s not my flag alone because?  Men and women of courage wrote a blank check to this country that included their very lives.  They paid for it.  And no, dropping a $20 at the local store does not make it yours exclusively just as it wouldn’t make it mine exclusively.  Why?

The flag doesn’t represent one of us or a few of us.  It represents all of us.  You insult it, you insult all of us.  Lack of respect for it shows lack of respect for this country, her citizens, and those who defend her both here and abroad.

comment by raz0r  on  03/21  at  08:06 AM

that doesn’t make any sense.  take the plastic bag off your head.  It is clearly labelled “not a toy”
