Victory in Iraq Day—11.22.08

It is up to the American people to declare victory. Which is exactly what we are doing right now.
There never will be an “official” announcement from the government or the media, so you can stop waiting for it.
Makes sense to me. As do his arguments.
Nominations for the 2008 Weblog Awards have been extended until Friday Nov. 21.
I think a few more nominations could really help insure we get into the finals!

Republican John McCain appeared to have picked up the consolation prize of Missouri Wednesday after the heartland state became the last to tot up all of its ballots in the US presidential election.
With all of Missouri’s 3,533 precincts now reporting their results from the November 4 election, McCain had won 1,445,812 votes to 1,442,180 for president-elect Barack Obama—a wafer-thin margin of 49.4 percent to 49.3.
The result will stand unless Democrat Obama contests the count........
[Alas, even the tonguemeister’s presence failed to rally the troops.]
California’s highest court agreed Wednesday to hear several legal challenges to the state’s new ban on same-sex marriage but refused to allow gay couples to resume marrying before it rules.
The California Supreme Court accepted three lawsuits seeking to nullify Proposition 8, a voter-approved constitutional amendment that overruled the court’s decision in May that legalized gay marriage.
All three cases claim the measure abridges the civil rights of a vulnerable minority group. They argue that voters alone did not have the authority to enact such a significant constitutional change.

Michelle Obama’s fashion savvy may earn her a spot on a future cover of Vogue magazine.

A Syrian site bombed by Israel last year had features resembling those of a nuclear reactor site, the UN nuclear watchdog says in a report.
But the International Atomic Energy Agency did not exclude the possibility the site was being used for purposes unrelated to nuclear activity.
In the first report on its findings in Syria, the IAEA said “significant” quantities of uranium were also found.
Syria has always maintained the site was a disused military building.
Israeli warplanes flattened the facility in the Syrian desert in September 2007 on suspicion that it was part of a covert nuclear weapons programme.
IAEA inspectors visited the bombed al-Kibar site in June, where they took samples that appear to have contained the radioactive material, but Damascus has blocked any follow-up trips.
According to the confidential report, a copy of which was obtained by the BBC, Syria says the uranium found there was residue from the Israeli missiles used in the air-raid.

“You were born to a Muslim father, but you chose to stand in the ranks of the enemies of the Muslims, and pray the prayer of the Jews, although you claim to be Christian, in order to climb the rungs of leadership in America...”
Obama’s insightful, forceful response?
We are pleased to see the respect for America has increased across the world.
Ok - I made that up. His real response was a diplomatic and forceful.

Today’s teenagers and young adults are far more likely than their parents to believe they’re great people, destined for maximum success as workers, spouses and parents, suggests a report comparing three decades of national surveys.
And these so-called Millennials or Gen Y young people may be heading for a fall when their self-esteem is punctured by reality, says psychologist Jean Twenge of San Diego State University. She examined changes from 1975 to 2006 in yearly surveys, given to thousands of high school seniors by University of Michigan researchers.
Compared with the Baby Boomers who were seniors in 1975, 12th-graders surveyed in 2006 were much more confident they’d be “very good” employees, mates and parents, and they were more self-satisfied overall, say Twenge and co-author W. Keith Campbell of the University of Georgia. Between half and two-thirds of the Gen Y teens gave themselves top ratings, compared with less than half in their parents’ generation. The report is in Psychological Science.
Boomer parents “are more likely than their parents were to praise children and maybe overpraise them,” Twenge says.
The tree-sit at UC Berkeley has been over for two months. The trees are long gone, and construction of the $125 million sports training center for the Cal Bears will start when the football season ends next month.
But the legal troubles for those who sat in trees or aided the tree sitters during the 21-month protest of the sports training center are far from over.
On Monday, nine of the 11 people who violated a court order and were cited by police, either on the ground or in the trees, were sentenced by Judge Marshall Whitley in Alameda County Superior Court..........
