Here’s what life looks like if one is employed as a staffer for the CA legislature:

Family health care insurance with monthly premiums paid entirely by the state. Five of seven plans require no employee contribution.

Annual reimbursement of up to $1,500 per employee in the Assembly (not the Senate) for medications, co-pays and other out-of-pocket health expenses.

Vacations ranging up to six weeks for longtime employees.

Free dental, vision and long-term disability insurance, including limited orthodontic services, and a free $50,000 life insurance policy.

Paid leave of up to three months for a new mother and one month of paid “parental bonding leave” for a new father.

Heavily subsidized public transit passes, free legal advice via telephone, three days of paid bereavement leave, free counseling for personal problems ranging from marital strife to drug abuse, and 12 days of paid sick leave that can accumulate from one year to the next.

...At age 50 and five years of service, employees can retire with lifetime health benefits with premiums paid by the state.

All in all, that means WE Californicateds pay about $32,000 per year in fringe and retirement benefits for an aide with a $100,000 salary.  Not bad compensation—even if ya do have to swim through slime every day to get it.

Dear iWon;

You Won. 

Which means the campaign is OVER.  It’s not about ‘Reds’ -vs- ‘Blues’ any more.  You are no longer fighting ‘political opponents’ for a political gain:  your job now is fighting for the American people—all of US.

You now embody a part of the ginormous machine that is the American government.  It is not the job of the American government to attack, belittle, or silence those who disagree with policies one part of it supports.  The job of the American government is to protect the right to speak of all the opinions of the American People.  That means that is your job, too.

So keep in mind that yours is a temporary stewardship and try—try real hard, now—not to cheapen the process by which Americans reach important decisions which effect US all.  Try to remember that you are POTUS for all The People, and all their varying opinions.  Try to summon from your predecessors some small modicum of the dignity that befits The Office.

Quit playing fast ‘n’ loose with the Power of the Position.  And try to remember—stewardships have been cut short for far less reason.

The People are remembering that one phrase, ”by The People.” You remember it, too.
