And there goes that “War for Oil” meme…
Oil companies from China, the world’s second-largest and fastest-growing consumer of oil, bid aggressively on Tuesday as Iraq began auctioning licenses in six large oil fields.
...A partnership of BP and the China National Petroleum Corporation, or C.N.P.C., won the first contract awarded, in the latest indication of Chinese interest in Iraq, a country that has until recently seemed to be firmly in the American sphere of influence for natural resources.

General Electric, the world’s largest industrial company [owner of NBC], has quietly become the biggest beneficiary of one of the government’s key rescue programs for banks.
At the same time, GE has avoided many of the restrictions facing other financial giants getting help from the government.
The company did not initially qualify for the program, under which the government sought to unfreeze credit markets by guaranteeing debt sold by banking firms. But regulators soon loosened the eligibility requirements, in part because of behind-the-scenes appeals from GE....

Under the Waxman-Markey climate bill ... refiners would have to buy allowances for carbon dioxide spewed from their plants and from vehicles when motorists burn their fuel. Imports would need permits only for the latter, which ConocoPhillips Chief Executive Officer Jim Mulva said would create a competitive imbalance.
“It will lead to the opportunity for foreign sources to bring in transportation fuels at a lower cost, which will have an adverse impact to our industry, potential shutdown of refineries and investment and, ultimately, employment,” [said Mulva]…
“There’s no question there are some marginal refiners that probably will not survive,” said Exxon Mobil’s Tillerson…
...said Geoffrey Styles, founder of GSW Strategy Group LLC in Vienna, Virginia. “We will end up with less domestic product on the market and a greater reliance on imports, all of which means higher, more volatile prices.” ... Carbon permits would add 77 cents a gallon to the price of gasoline…
The same amount of gasoline that would have $1 in carbon costs imposed if it were domestic would have 10 cents less added if it were imported, ...
Just for the gas, the cost would be “an additional $178 billion annually, or about $560 for each man, woman and child in the U.S.”
So, lessee… What kinds of manufacturing/industry uses fuel? All of ‘em. Check. Service industries? All of ‘em. Check. Financials? All of ‘em. Check. Consumer discretionary/necessities? All of ‘em. Check. Communications? Tech? Materials? All of ‘em. Check.
So what is this? A ginormous tax which will depress the economy, give advantages to off-shore sellers of everything, and make US more reliant on foreign oil. Which is just the opposite of what they promised that this pile of shiite was for.
So what is the actual goal?
Carbon prices will soar as U.S. refiners compete with each other and other industrial companies for a limited number of allowances ... permit prices may top $100 a ton.
Yep. A new derivatives market for market playahs to ....er, play in.

Just in case you were wondering what is going on around the ol’ Fetid Lake of Doom today, its another Tea Party. More information here.
Looks like they’re also going to come back to the Capitol on July 4 too.
If you’re in the mood for a counter protest, someone is trying to get one together (via email):
I was going through Capitol Lake with a friend at noon and was shocked to see a giant hate fest happening at the park with music, offensive signs and anti-immigrant and anti-gay marriage booths. I didn’t get more then that out of it, because I had to run away from all that hate…

See there is this 14th Amendment which adds to the Federal governments’s constitutional right to lay and collect taxes. Anti tax extremists are in fact radicals determined to over turn the constitution. It is not surprising this movement attracts racist Nativists who fear and loath Mexicans and other brown skinned Central Americans.
Only the ideologically blinkered would not see the racist anti-government hatred tea partiers unabashedly spew whenever a critical mass of these traitors gather. It is hate: Hate, fear, and longing for the unattainable unadulterated privileged of the ruling class. In the end it is self hatred that fuels the irrational passion of Tea Partiers. It is Hate, an ugly hate ultimately directed at their own friends and family. And that’s sad.

For the past five months, White House aides and friends of the Obamas have been quietly visiting local churches and vetting the sermons of prospective first ministers in a search for a new - and uncontroversial - church home. Obama has even sampled a few himself, attending services at 19th Street Baptist on the weekend before his inauguration and celebrating Easter at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Now, in an unexpected move, Obama has told White House aides that instead of joining a congregation in Washington, D.C., he will follow in George W. Bush’s footsteps and make his primary place of worship Evergreen Chapel, the nondenominational church at Camp David. (See pictures of Barack Obama’s family tree.)
A number of factors drove the decision - financial, political, personal - but chief among them was the desire to worship without being on display. Obama was reportedly taken aback by the circus stirred up by his visit to 19th Street Baptist in January. Lines started forming three hours before the morning service, and many longtime members were literally left out in the cold as the church filled with outsiders eager to see the new President. Even at St. John’s, which is so accustomed to presidential visitors that it is known as the “Church of the Presidents,” worshippers couldn’t help themselves from snapping photos of Obama on their camera phones as they walked down the aisle past him to take communion....
