Winchester white box is very reliable reasonably priced practice ammo. I love it, but it’s ball ammo, not personal-defense ammo. Load your fighting piece with Hydra-Shoks, hollow-points, etc.

When it comes to caliber, remember that you’re not shooting to kill but to stop an attack (heck you can kill with nail clippers). If you can’t hit eye sockets or heart with near-perfect reliability under fire while bullets are raining down on you and adrenaline is coursing through your veins (and you can’t), a big ol’ bullet disables better than a smaller one. It all boils down to how bulky/heavy a piece you want to tote around that day.
