and the crowd went chirp

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on an overseas trip to embrace an audience and a topic for which President Bush has shown scant affection: “Old Europe” and global warming.

Pelosi, D-Calif., and seven other House members left Saturday for meetings with scientists and politicians in Greenland, Germany and Belgium on ways to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

~*~

The House Foreign Affairs Committee recently approved a bill to obligate the administration to send senior diplomats to international meetings on climate change “with instructions to secure binding commitments for reform,” according to a committee statement.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is pushing a nonbinding resolution that would press the administration to work on several diplomatic fronts to combat global warming.

The new head of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, is a strong advocate of battling climate change. She replaced Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., who has called global warming a hoax........................

Lemme (try to) get this straight:

Thank -You-Nancy makes up some set up a new House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and appointed Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., as its chairman. The committee cannot write legislation, but was created to study and offer recommendations on how to deal with global warming that will obligate the administration to send senior diplomats to international meetings on climate change “with instructions to secure binding commitments for reform and Nacy’s going on another vacation- after firing someone who didn’t agree with her [*cough* Alberto Gonzales *cough*] - at our expense for what?????

The Rome kickoff to Barbra Streisand’s upcoming European tour has apparently been scrapped, amid a brouhaha by Italian consumer groups over high ticket prices for the famed performer’s show.

The cancellation of the June 15 show — which would have been Streisand’s first ever in Italy — has nothing to do with the current controversy, a spokeswoman for Concert Promotions International told Reuters.

Organizers cited production difficulties as the reason the Rome concert has been scrapped.

American Icon

Stagecoach - 1939 ~~ Sands of Iwo Jima - 1949

Rio Grande - 1950 ~~ The Searchers (his personal favorite) 1956

The Longest Day - 1962 ~~ The Green Berets - 1968

John Wayne, born 100 years ago May 26, was a movie star of unrivaled mass appeal, an actor of matchless swagger and force—and one of the most controversial film icons ever. The man who made immortal characters of the obsessive tracker Ethan Edwards (in “The Searchers"), the tormented boxer Sean Thornton ("The Quiet Man") and the brutal cattle baron Tom Dunson ("Red River") was both deceptively simple and mysterious, a fascinatingly durable guy who began in Poverty Row westerns and became the most popular movie star of the 20th Century—despite that, for much of his career, he was blasted by some critics who found his acting predictable, his range limited, his movies repetitive and his politics obnoxious.

The public didn’t agree. They still don’t. And they were right. Last year, Wayne—born Marion Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, and nicknamed “Duke” in boyhood—was named the third most popular movie star in a 2007 Harris Poll, despite the fact that he’s been dead for 27 years. Yet, the more than 150 movies he made between 1930 (his first year as John Wayne in “The Big Trail") and 1976, the year of his swan song “The Shootist,” are still alive, still enjoyed by millions.

Happy Birthday, Duke.....we sure do miss yah, pilgrim. Give Jed a few pats on the belly for us.

Students who had been planning to walk across the stage at graduation ceremonies this weekend were instead walking a picket line Thursday morning.

The Trimble Tech High School seniors marched in front of Fort Worth Independent School District headquarters to protest Wednesday’s decision by trustees to bar students who failed the TAKS test from commencement exercises.

About a dozen young people, carrying signs and chanting, began picketing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. They represent the 613 Fort Worth seniors who did not pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam.

Secret cell key leader detained, air strike in Sadr City

May 26, 2007
Release A070526a

SECRET CELL KEY LEADER DETAINED, AIR STRIKE IN SADR CITY
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Iraqi and Coalition Forces detained one suspected terrorist cell leader and killed at least five terrorists Saturday morning during raids in Sadr City.

The individual detained during the raid is believed to be the suspected leader in a secret cell terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq to Iran for terrorist training.

After successfully detaining the suspected secret cell leader during the morning’s operation, nine vehicles moved into the target area and were positioning themselves to block and ambush Iraqi and Coalition Forces as they began to depart the area.

Iraqi and Coalition Forces responded to a perceived threat and called in close air support.

All nine vehicles were engaged during the air strike, killing at least five terrorists.

Intelligence reports indicate the individual detained is suspected of having direct ties to a senior leader of a significant EFP network as well as acting as a proxy for an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officer.

“We will continue to seek out and tirelessly pursue these terrorists who seek to undermine the Iraqi government and place innocents Iraqis in harms way,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson.

Now I get it (lite bulb) that’s why the theys didn’t want to change SS and just added to the amount paid in.  Glad it was all for our own good just like this health care is being shoved down our throats and up our **s.  It’s good for us wether we like it or not.
Wait until you draw some of that savings you’ll need for your retirement and see the taxes you’ll pay on that.  Then if you die b/4 you use it the taxes all your kids will pay on it and the free health care you’re going to get.
You’ll love it because it’s all been for our own good.
Our government has to pay for all those unfunded wars.  Damn President Bush it’s all his fault.

I’m sure the first people to loose their social security payments will be those who don’t need it.  You know, those people who worked like dogs their whole life and scrimped and saved to where they have enough saved/invested to draw about as much out as they receive in SS.  Or maybe they payed off their homes so they would not have to worry about that expense.

You have to read stories about current Social Security deficits carefully. Many minimize or eliminate the deficit by crediting non-existent interest on the non-existent trust funds. The real deficit is OASDI taxes minus ( benefits and expenses. ) Remember that every federal trust fund is actually part of the national debt.

Any plan to save Social Security by raising current taxes is a scam since, by law, any excess taxes will be credited to the debt and spent. The exception would be if these new taxes were used to set up individual accounts, hopefully with rights of inheritance. But there is already a move afoot in Congress to try the Argentinian method of confiscating all IRAs and 401-Ks

FYI: the Supreme Court has already rules that entitlements are not guaranteed and can be reduced at anytime by act of Congress.
